Thursday To-Do | Clay Trinket Bowls

Thursday To-Do | Clay Trinket Bowls

I love these clay bowls from Burkatron. One can always use another bowl for trinkets right?

The best part is you can use clay that’s made from regular household ingredients! The recipe is below.

Homemade clay ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 3/4 cup water

Tools & Supplies:

  • Non-stick mat
  • Rolling Pin
  • circle cookie cutter  and bowls
  • Stamps
  • Doily
  • Filing tools
  • Gold paint
  • Paint brushes

Mix all the clay ingredients together in a sauce pan and cook over medium heat stirring continuously. Once the clay starts to be too thick to stir, turn off heat, and turn clay out onto a non-stick mat to cool. Cover with a light cloth to prevent the clay from drying out. Once the clay is cool, you can proceed to make your bowls.

Roll the clay out so it’s about 1/4″ thick.

Use cookie cutter and bowls to cut out circles

Note: store any extra clay wrapped in plastic in an airtight container so you can use it later.

Use your fingers to form a bowl shape from the small circle

Then place inside a small bowl to help keep the shape

You can use rubber stamps and a doily to decorate the clay before forming bowls.

Quickly form a bowl shape with the clay and place in a slightly larger bowl to dry.

For the doily pressed clay, I decided to have the impression on the outside of the bowl, so I placed it with the embossed side down in the bowl.

Now let clay dry overnight.

With all the sunny hot weather we have right now, I left my bowls outside and they were dry in a matter of hours! Now it’s time to finish them off

I used my filing tools from BasicGrey to smooth down the edges of the bowls, then I painted them with my favourite gold acrylic paint.

I seriously love the imperfect organic shapes of these bowls. Here are the largest and smallest on my dressing table, next to my other DIY trinket tray.

If you love these bowls share with your crafty friends on Pinterest!

  • Thank you so much for this great tutorial. I might end up using the air drying clay I already have, but I love that you included a recipe to make our own.
I have been wanting to create trinkets bowls for a long time, this is the sign I needed 😉

  • Love the bowls and love the the of your blog! Organization of art supplies is really important to me – but I know a lot of creative people can struggle with it. Thanks for sharing.
